A 3:13-19 Choosing of the twelve

B 3:20-35 Opposition to Jesus by close associates and picture of Jesus as one who forms new family

C 4:1-5:42 Sayings and deeds which manifest division expressed often in language of contrast (4:1-8; 22; 30-34) or in expressions which evoke wonder or surprise (4:41; 5:20; 5:42)

B' 6:1-6a Opposition to Jesus by his family and kin

A' 6:7-13 Mission of the twelve

Therefore the context and relation of the saying on the true family to other parts of the gospel sheds light on its meaning. Jesus is the one who calls those he wishes and his activity precipitates opposition and rejection by his natural family. However Jesus forms a new family which will be constituted by those whom he explicitly calls (the disciples) as well as those who gathered around him to hear his teaching and are summoned to do the will of God and thus become members of a new family.
